Texas AFT Endorses Sylvia Garcia for Senate
District 6 in March 2 Runoff Special Election
Texas AFT, the Texas branch of the American Federation of Teachers, is pleased to announce the endorsement of Sylvia Garcia for Senate District 6 in the runoff special election coming up on March 2 in Houston. Texas AFT has more than 65,000 members in school districts and institutions of higher education across the state. More than one-fourth of them are members of Texas AFT affiliates in the Houston area.
In announcing the union’s endorsement today, Texas AFT President Linda Bridges said:
“Texas AFT members recognize in Sylvia Garcia a strong champion ready to take on the challenge of securing adequate and equitable state funding for all our students. She knows the issues:
--the need to restore state aid to schools that was drastically cut in 2011, to the great detriment of our students;
--the need to curb the state’s obsession with standardized testing that has turned into a hindrance to real teaching and learning;
--the need to support parent/educator/community initiatives to build up neighborhood schools rather than undermine them with private-school vouchers and other privatization schemes that would drain resources from the public schools serving the children of Senate District 6.
“Sylvia Garcia has the knowhow and tenacity to get things done for these children. The voters of Senate District 6 can rest assured that she will be fighting for their children at every level of our education system every day she serves in the Texas Senate.”
Texas AFT represents more than 65,000 teachers, paraprofessionals, support personnel, and higher-education employees across the state. Texas AFT is affiliated with the 1.5-million-member American Federation of Teachers.
