Statement on Filibuster of School Finance Bill:

Texas AFT President Linda Bridges:

SB 1811 deserved to be defeated. Sen. Davis performed a public service by creating more time for public scrutiny and questioning before the legislature makes this fateful decision to cut funding deeply for our public schools. We have been asking state senators and state representatives to vote against this last-minute, cobbled-together school-finance bill, because it would do lasting damage to public education, Texas schoolchildren, and their teachers.

We have been heartened by growing opposition to a plan that cuts our schools' funding while the state leaves untouched a Rainy Day Fund that would be more than enough to render these cuts unnecessary.

The district-by-district data showing the cuts involved in this plan are bringing home to legislators--literally--the impact of the deep cuts in public education. These cuts were much easier for lawmakers to stomach when they were bundled in one number, not cuts specific to school districts on each legislator's home turf.

We think that opposition to this plan will only grow as citizens and legislators become more familiar with the details of just how inadequate and inequitable this bill is.

Texas AFT represents more than 65,000 teachers, paraprofessionals, support personnel, and higher-education employees across the state. Texas AFT is affiliated with the 1.5-million-member American Federation of Teachers.
