HFT Member and Co-Steward Selected as Fulbright Exchange Participant
Dezavala Elemetary co-steward and art teacher extrodinairre, Jean King, will spend part of her summer exploring Japan as part of a Japanese sponsored exhange program intented to foster deeper understanding of the Japanese people and their culture by Americans. "Jean is the perfect teacher to be part of this program and art is the perfect medium through which Jean will bring the culture and life of Japan back to the Magnolia Community served by Dezavala Elementary," said HFT Director Zeph Capo. King, who is looking forward to attending performances in both Noh- and Kabuki-style theatres, says she is thrilled by the prospect of exeriencing a traditional tea ceremony and observing typical art classes while overseas. King hopes to post entries on her blog while visiting Japan, and she encourages other educators to persevere in their quest for acceptance to the program. Jean is not the first HFT member to be accepted by the Fulbright Exchange Program. Christine Thomaz, ESL teacher, has already completed a tour through the program and returned to share her experiences with the 5th Ward/Denver Harbor community served by Wheatley High School. The experience of the program has helped prepare Ms. Thomaz for her current teaching assignment in Southwest Houston.
